Petra moved from The Netherlands to New Denver in 2015. Next to her art business, she works parttime in Kokanee Glacier Park as a hut keeper. Her multi-media visual artwork is often inspired by her time spent in the mountains and her love for the natural world.
Petra Hekkenberg holds two bachelor’s degrees from The Netherlands: a Bachelor of Engineering (Industrial Product Design) and a Bachelor of Design (Public Space Design at Design Academy Eindhoven). Starting young, Petra joined adult drawing classes at the age of 10. Part of her skill sets are visual arts, playground design, graphic design, book design, public speaking, community engagement and project coordination. Petra has run community projects in The Netherlands, Namibia and Canada. She offers her services for commissioned illustrative work and public space design.
In 2022 and 2024 Petra self-published two hand-drawn illustrated journals under the title “In the Alpine” and “Further in the Alpine”. Petra sells her illustrated greeting cards and art prints in ca. 25 independent stores across the Kootenays. “The Art of Safe Keeping” is her latest project; with this community art project she addresses the impact of wildfires on our communities.
