New Denver May Days

The May long weekend brings families, friends and new acquaintances together for a weekend of fun and games – dances, kids’ games, a rubber duck race, fishing derby, golf tournament, beer gardens, soapbox races, and more. Most activities take place at Centennial Park on the lake. The Chamber sponsors the ever-popular pancake breakfast on Sunday morning.

 

New Denver Friday Market

The Friday Market happens in the heart of New Denver every Friday from June to September, 10 am-2 pm. Fresh local produce and artisans’ wares make this a vibrant community event that attracts multitudes of people to the village.

 

Slocan Saturday Market

The Slocan Saturday Market has farmers, artisans, crafters, and imports at Expo Park in the Village of Slocan from June to August, 10-2.

 

Canada Day Celebration, July 1st in Silverton

Each year, Silverton marks Canada Day with a family-oriented community celebration including a pancake breakfast in the Silverton Memorial Hall, a parade down the main street, and food and fun activities at Dewis and Creekside Parks. Fireworks at the Day Park (if the season allows).

 

Valhalla Fine Arts Society Summer Events

The Valhalla Fine Arts Society offers intensive programs in theatre arts and music in Silverton and New Denver every summer. While the programs are underway, the public is treated to many wonderful performances by students and instructors.

 

Hills Garlic Festival, September in New Denver

Now held in Centennial Park, New Denver, the Hills Garlic Festival is always scheduled for the first Sunday after Labour Day. The Hills Recreation Society manages this wildly popular outdoor market with more than 150 artisan and food vendors, live music and children’s entertainment. Some 6,000 people come to the festival, listed as one of the world’s top ten garlic fests by virtualtourist.com in 2010 and noted by Canadian Geographic Travel. A highlight of the year, the festival is a fundraiser for recreation facilities and services for the area. “Where culture meets agriculture.”

Merchants’ Night, December in New Denver

The Slocan Valley Chamber of Commerce coordinates Merchants’ Night with New Denver’s downtown businesses for an evening of late-night shopping and fun on the town. Santa arrives to the Silvery Slocan Museum at 202 6th Ave, on the Fire Truck, and there are free hot dogs, hot chocolate and goodies. Sponsored by Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Power Corporation.

 

Christmas Tree Light Up, December in Slocan

The community of Slocan gathers at the Wellness Centre grounds one evening in December to see the tree light up, and to enjoy caroling and bonfires.

 

North Valley Mountain Film Festival, February/March in Silverton

The North Valley Mountain Film Festival packs the Silverton Memorial Hall with people from far and wide, come to enjoy both professional and home-grown films and photos of what drew many here – the lakes, mountains, wilderness, and outdoor adventure. Films are produced by people of all ages and most have a local and regional focus.

The Slocan Lake area has a wide choice of community halls for events such as weddings, conferences, retreats, meetings, and performances.

 

Slocan

The Slocan Valley Legion Hall has a 100-person capacity, commercial kitchen, stage. Bookings: 250-355-2672.

 

Silverton

The Silverton Memorial Hall has a seating capacity of 200. One of the finest acoustic halls of its size in Canada, the hall has staging, a lighting system, full sound system, LCD projector, 200″ screen, and Internet connectivity. Full kitchen. Bookings: 250-358-2472.

 

This iconic heritage building houses a visual arts gallery, a performance theatre, and a workshop space. Professional sound and lights are available, as well as a kitchenette. The capacity is 100. Bookings: silvertongallery@gmail.com

The Silverton Fire Hall Meeting Room is a bright space with a kitchen and can accommodate up to 24 people. Bookings: 250-358-2472

New Denver

Bosun Hall is the community’s largest hall with a capacity of 175 with a full kitchen and stage. Run by Lucerne Association for Community Education (LACE). Bookings: 250-358-7771 or 250-358-7162.

 

Knox Hall has a capacity of 44 and offers a small kitchen. Bookings: 250-358-2316

 

Kohan Reflection Garden is an idyllic place for a wedding. A beautiful Japanese-style garden on the lake, the garden has a profusion of exotic species, quiet pools, a dry grass garden and breathtaking views of Slocan Lake and the Valhalla Mountains. Bookings: 250-358-7765.
