Maa Press’ mandate is to publish radically and reliably regional books set in the Columbia Mountains. Our eight titles are written by Kootenay authors who write about the region and their communities. The cover art and the illustrations are also homegrown. Our philosophy is a bio-regional, decolonizing one in which the land, water, local community and Indigenous knowledge is valued and celebrated.
Our most recent title, Not Extinct: Keeping the Sinixt Way (2018) by Marilyn James and Taress Alexis is one we are especially proud of. The Sinixt authors explore many aspects of their living culture including food, games, language, hunting and other cultural practices as well as the impact of the 1956 bureaucratic genocide of their people in Canada. This beautiful book has full page colour and black and white illustrations by 17 artists from the region and comes with a free audio download of the authors telling traditional and contemporary Sinixt stories. A Teacher’s Guide is also available.
Maa Press has also published The “children’s book” The Purcell Suite: Upholding the Wild (2007) edited by K.L. Kivi , The Town of Nothing (2015), featuring Amber Santos’ lyrical and fun drawings, When the Path is Not a Straight Line by Ellen Burt of Argenta, Blue Valley by Luanne Armstrong of Boswell and The Inner Green by K.Linda Kivi.
